Where to Put Grab Bars (and How to Mount Them So They Hold)

Stainless steel grab bar in a bathroom

A properly installed grab bar is one of the cheapest, most effective ways to prevent a bathroom fall. The key word is properly.

The most useful spots

  • Tub or shower entry: a vertical bar on the wall at the entry, to hold while stepping in and out.
  • Inside the tub or shower: a horizontal or angled bar on the long wall, to steady yourself while standing or sitting down.
  • Beside the toilet: a horizontal bar on the side wall, to push up from.

Heights

Accessibility standards in Canada and the US place horizontal grab bars 33 to 36 inches above the floor (or tub floor). For a home, the best height is the one that suits the person. Have them stand or sit as they would use it and mark where their hand naturally goes.

Mounting: this matters most

  • Screw the bar into wall studs, or use anchors made specifically for grab bars and rated to hold a person's weight. Regular drywall plugs will pull out.
  • Use a stud finder. Studs are usually 16 inches apart. Angled bars can help you reach two studs.
  • For tile, use a tile or glass drill bit and seal the holes with silicone so water doesn't get behind the tile.
  • If you're not comfortable drilling tile or finding studs, hire a handyman or contractor. It's a short job.

About suction-cup bars

Suction-cup handles are fine as a balance aid only, for a light touch while you step. They can let go without warning. Never pull yourself up with one or rely on it to catch a fall. Test the suction before every use.

Towel bars and soap dishes are not grab bars, and they aren't built to hold body weight.
