Lift Chair Buying Guide: Size, Positions and What to Check

Power lift recliner chair

A lift chair is a power recliner that tilts forward and up, gently helping someone to standing. Choosing the right size is the most important part, because a chair that's too big or too small won't lift them safely.

Size the chair to the person

  • Petite: usually for people under about 5'3".
  • Medium: usually about 5'3" to 5'11".
  • Large or tall: usually 6' and over.

Check two measurements on the product specs:

  • Seat height: sitting, feet should rest flat on the floor.
  • Seat depth: the back of the knees should sit just past the front edge of the seat, with the back fully against the backrest.

Positions

  • 2-position: sits upright and reclines partway. Simple and usually the cheapest.
  • 3-position: reclines almost flat for napping.
  • Infinite position (dual motor): the backrest and footrest move separately, so you can raise the legs while sitting up. Good for swelling in the legs, breathing comfort or people who sleep in their chair.

Weight and room

  • Standard lift chairs are often rated around 300 lb. Heavy-duty models go to about 375 to 500 lb.
  • Recliners need space behind them. "Wall-hugger" designs slide forward as they recline and need only a few inches.
  • Lift chairs are heavy, often 100 to 150 lb or more. Plan for two people to move it into place.

Power and safety

  • Plug it into a wall outlet or a quality surge protector, not a long extension cord.
  • Look for a battery backup. During a power outage, it lets the chair return to sitting so nobody is stuck reclined. This matters in rural areas and winter storms.
  • Keep pets, feet and cords clear of the mechanism underneath while it's moving.
